Conflict Detail Descriptions
Mozambique (ASWJ):
The limited war over the orientation of the political system between the Islamist militia Ahlu Sunna Wal Jammaa (ASWJ), locally also referred to as al-Shabaab, and the government escalated to a war. Most of the recorded measures took place in the northern province of Cabo Delgado in which nine out of 16 districts were affected by militant activities. Both the nature and frequency of the attacks changed compared to last year. In addition to civilians, ASWJ increasingly targeted ozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS), private security companies, the police, and major cities. Moreover, increased use of force and human rights violations against civilians by FDS were reported. At the beginning of the year, the Russian Wagner Group was replaced by the South African Dyck Advisory Group (DAG), another private military company, in support of the government. Since then, the DAG has deployed helicopters and ground troops in several clashes with ASWJ.
